À la carte
À la carte means every dish is listed and priced on its own, so guests build their meal by choosing and paying for items individually.
How à la carte works
French for by the card, à la carte is the default format for most restaurants: each appetizer, main, side, and dessert carries its own price, and the check is the sum of what was ordered. It gives guests maximum choice and lets the kitchen price each item to its own margin.
The trade-off is less predictable spend per guest and more complex prep than a fixed menu.
Example
A guest orders a $14 appetizer, a $28 main, a $9 side, and a $11 dessert. The à la carte check is $62, built entirely from individually priced items rather than a single set price.
